Punch the Trump Game Review

Punch the Trump Game Review

With the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States approaching on January 20th, it seems appropriate to delve into a minigame themed around the President-Elect himself, Donald Trump. For our first game review on the site, we will be tackling developer Brutal Studio’s “Epic Celeb Brawl: Punch the Trump.” It is important to note that this review will not touch upon any political views or stances, but merely a critique of parody-based minigame. However, your entertainment from the game may personally vary depending on your fondness for the future President.

At first glance, “Punch he Trump” is simple, silly, and quite violent. You as the player are pitted against Trump in a boxing ring, duking it out to see who stands victorious. Using light and heavy attacks to jab and uppercut, Trump will become visibly battered and bloody. Of course the game’s cartoonish art style and over-the-top nature are purposely intended to be comical. When Trump’s mound of hair flops wildy in certain directions while he spouts quotes like “you’re fired,” the humor can prove effective, but not the most tasteful at times.

The game controls smoothly and is responsive, using the z, x, n, m, and spacebar keys to punch and block. By stringing together different hits, combos can be performed for more devastating attacks. In addition, the inclusion of finisher combos at the end of bouts in the style of 2D fighters like Mortal Kombat are also a nice touch. Landing combos can be satisfying and will earn you a higher score at the end of a fight. Once in awhile, a meter will reach its maximum indicating Trump’s Rage Mode. At these times the player must only block as Trump bombards them with a flurry of blows accompanied by an upbeat techno song. Moments like those aren’t necessarily more engaging, but definitely add to the game’s goofiness. With a limited amount of controls, the game is simple enough for anyone to pick up and enjoy a few times, but can get stale quite quickly.

Aside from the novelty of smacking down a public figure, “Punch the Trump” attempts to increase its longevity with upgrades that can be purchased with belts, the in-game currency. Depending on the high scores you’ve achieved, you’ll earn more belts that can be used to buy lethal weapons like throwing stars, a baseball bat, and even gold bars. Some weapons certainly do more damage than others, especially more than the fists you start out with. However, additional functions or features for the equipment offer nothing more in depth besides a damage boost. A nice addition to future installments of the Epic Celeb Brawl series would be more weapons, combos, and difficulty levels.

Although “Punch the Trump” lacks a lot of substance, even for a minigame, its ridiculous presentation and button-mashing gameplay are enjoyable for at least a match or two. As intended, the game is not meant to be taken very seriously and we recommend giving it a try. For those who aren’t fans of Trump, this minigame might even help you relieve some built-up frustrations in a non-obstructing manner.

Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoyed our thoughts on this wacky minigame. Best of luck to everyone out there as America makes its transition to a new President
