Mini Games
Mini games is a term most commonly used to describe online games played via the web browser.
These online games often use adobe flash or java to provide a rich gaming experience within the browser and although they are small in terms of file size and content they can be amongst the most addictive games causing the player to have "just one more try" to complete a seemingly simple level.
These online games are typically free to play with advertising generating the revenue for the game site.
There has been a growth in the number of online games offering multi-player gaming against other players and also for tabulating high scores and offering prizes to the players who have achieved the top positions playing those online games.
Before this move into online games, the idea of mini games started out life as sub-games within larger titles. The game player would either need to complete the mini games to advance in the main title or else they could play the mini games as a reward for having "discovered" them.
Mini games that need to be discovered and are not crucial to the path of the main game are also referred to as "easter eggs" or "secret games".
As time passed, the term mini games evolved to include stand alone titles used to help promote the main title and there have even been a number of commercial releases that are in essence just a series of mini games packaged together to create a single title.
